What is hyperhidrosis treatment?

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is treated with injectable neuromodulator placed into the skin of the affected area. The active ingredient blocks the nerve signal telling sweat glands to activate: switching off excessive sweating in the treated area for many months.

For severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis meeting specific clinical criteria, this treatment may be Medicare/PBS-supported. For other cases, including palms, soles, or moderate sweating, it's a private treatment. Eligibility for the subsidised pathway is discussed at consultation.

The signal-blocking mechanism

The neuromodulator blocks the release of acetylcholine at the nerve endings supplying sweat glands. Without the signal, the glands don't activate, even when overactive nervous-system input would normally trigger heavy sweating. The treated area becomes dry for the duration of the medication's effect.
