What it is

What are wrinkle relaxer injections?

Wrinkle relaxer injections are a prescription-only treatment that uses a purified protein to temporarily reduce the nerve signals reaching selected facial muscles. When a treated muscle contracts less strongly, the skin above it creases less: softening the lines formed by repeated expression.

In Australia these injections are classified as Schedule 4 medicines, which is why reputable providers describe them generically rather than by brand. Treatment must follow a consultation with a registered prescriber, and at Aesthetic Doctors Australia every treatment is planned and performed by a doctor.

  • Full effect

    10–14 days

    Lines progressively soften, settled result

  • Typical duration

    3–4 months

Many patients need less product over time as creasing reduces.

  • Back to your day

    Same day

Tiny injection points; no downtime for most patients.

What it treats

What do wrinkle relaxer injections treat?

Wrinkle relaxer injections is most often planned for dynamic wrinkles: frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet. The treatment only makes sense when it matches the cause of your concern; here is where it fits.

  • Frown lines & forehead wrinkles

    Explore this concern

    Why it happens

The glabellar complex and frontalis muscle contract thousands of times a day. Over years, repeated folding of the skin creates lines that first appear with expression and later remain at rest.

    Treatment role

Relaxing the over-active muscles softens existing dynamic lines and reduces the repeated creasing that deepens them over time.

  • Teeth grinding & jaw tension

    Explore this concern

    Why it happens

Chronic clenching enlarges the masseter muscle, which can cause jaw pain, tension headaches and a progressively wider lower face.

    Treatment role

Targeted injections reduce the strength of the clenching muscle, easing symptoms and gradually slimming its bulk.

  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)

    Explore this concern

    Why it happens

Overactive nerve signalling drives sweat glands to produce far more sweat than temperature regulation requires, most commonly in the underarms.

    Treatment role

The same signal-blocking mechanism can switch off overactive sweat glands in the treated area for several months at a time.

How it works

How do wrinkle relaxer injections work?

Forehead line anatomy reference for wrinkle relaxer planning in Melbourne Step 01

01 / 04

How expression lines form

Every expression folds the skin above the moving muscle. Young skin, rich in collagen and elastin, springs back. As collagen production declines, roughly one per cent per year from the mid-twenties, the skin recovers less completely each time, and the fold gradually etches in as a permanent line.

02 / 04

What the injection does

The treatment blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical messenger that tells a muscle to contract. The targeted muscle relaxes in proportion to the dose; carefully mapped placement means neighbouring muscles continue working normally and expression is preserved.

Why placement matters more than product

The difference between a natural and a frozen result lies in anatomy. Muscle size, fibre direction, brow position and the balance between elevator and depressor muscles vary between faces. Dr Rakib's background teaching surgical anatomy informs a personalised injection map for every patient rather than a standard grid.

What it does not do

Wrinkle relaxer injections do not add volume, lift sagging tissue or change skin quality. Static lines that remain at complete rest, or laxity-driven changes, usually need collagen-stimulating or volumising approaches instead: which is why assessment comes before any recommendation.

Where it's treated

Where on the face and body can wrinkle relaxer injections be used?

Frown lines (glabella)

  • Vertical '11' lines
  • Stern or tired resting expression

Softens the corrugator and procerus muscles that pull the brows together.

Forehead lines

  • Horizontal lines when raising brows

Balanced dosing of the frontalis softens lines while keeping natural brow lift.

Crow's feet

  • Fanning lines at the outer eyes when smiling

Relaxes the outer fibres of the orbicularis oculi without affecting the smile.

Brow

  • Heavy or flat brow position

Strategic placement can allow a subtle brow elevation by rebalancing opposing muscles.

Masseter (jaw)

  • Clenching, grinding, wide lower face

Reduces muscle overactivity for both symptom relief and gradual facial slimming.

Whether it suits you

Are wrinkle relaxer injections right for you?

The two lists below are where that answer starts; it is confirmed in person, never assumed. Balanced information protects you.

May be suitable for

  • Lines that appear or deepen with expression
  • Early static lines you would like to stop progressing
  • Jaw clenching, grinding or masseter prominence
  • Patients wanting prevention with a natural, mobile result

The assessment

What happens at a wrinkle relaxer injections consultation?

Expertise shows in process. Before any recommendation, your consultation examines:

Book your assessment
  1. 01

Your expression patterns: which muscles dominate when you frown, raise your brows and smile

  2. 02

Muscle bulk and strength, which determine dosing

  3. 03

Brow position and the balance of lifting and depressing muscles

  4. 04

Skin quality, and whether lines are dynamic, static or mixed

  5. 05

Previous treatments and how you responded

  6. 06

Medical history, medications and any contraindications

  7. 07

What you want your face to do, and not do, after treatment

What to expect

How long do wrinkle relaxer injections take to work?

The short version: visible from 3–5 days, full effect at 10–14 days, typically lasting 3–4 months. Stage by stage:

  1. Day 0

    Treatment day

Quick appointment with tiny injection points; most patients return straight to their day.

  2. Days 3–5

    First changes

Treated muscles begin to soften; lines start releasing.

  3. Days 10–14

    Full effect

Complete result visible. Any fine-tuning is reviewed at this point.

  4. Months 1–3

    Maintained result

Smooth result holds while the skin gets a rest from repeated creasing.

  5. Months 3–4+

    Gradual return

Movement returns progressively. Repeat treatment maintains the result; with consistent treatment many patients need less over time.

Recovery

What is recovery like after wrinkle relaxer injections?

Typical downtime: no downtime for most patients; small injection marks settle within hours. The specifics:

What's normal afterwards

  • Small raised points at injection sites settling within 20–30 minutes
  • Occasionally a pinpoint bruise that fades over a few days
  • Mild headache in the first day or two for some patients

What to avoid

  • Rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours
  • Lying flat or strenuous exercise for 4 hours
  • Facials, saunas and high heat for 24 hours
  • Alcohol on treatment day

Risks and limits

What are the risks of wrinkle relaxer injections?

No effective treatment is risk-free, and no treatment does everything. Knowing both sides is part of informed consent.

Possible side effects

  • Temporary redness, swelling or bruising at injection points
  • Short-lived headache
  • Uncommonly, temporary heaviness of the brow or eyelid: dose- and placement-related, and it resolves as the product wears off
  • Asymmetry, correctable at review

Limitations to understand

  • Results are temporary by design, typically 3–4 months
  • Deep static lines may soften but rarely disappear with this treatment alone
  • Does not treat skin laxity, volume loss or sun damage
  • Individual response varies; a review appointment fine-tunes the plan

The alternatives

Wrinkle relaxer injections compared with the alternatives

Wrinkle relaxer injections vs volume enhancement

Wrinkle relaxer injections

  • Treat the muscle movement causing dynamic lines
  • No volume added
  • Effect builds over days, lasts months

Volume enhancement

  • Replaces or adds structural volume
  • Treats static folds, hollows and contours
  • Immediate visible change, lasts longer

Which one They solve different problems and are often complementary: wrinkle relaxer for lines of movement, filler for lines and hollows of volume loss. Assessment determines whether you need one, both or neither.

Wrinkle relaxer injections vs skin boosters

Wrinkle relaxer injections

  • Act on muscle
  • Best for expression lines
  • Result measured in reduced creasing

Skin boosters (e.g. polynucleotides, bioremodelling)

  • Act on skin quality itself
  • Best for fine crepey texture and hydration
  • Result measured in skin condition

Which one Fine lines on well-hydrated skin behave differently from lines etched into thinned skin. Where skin quality is the driver, a booster programme may precede or replace muscle treatment.

What it costs

What do wrinkle relaxer injections cost?

You receive an itemised written quote at consultation, before committing to anything. The consultation is $75 for 45 minutes with Dr Rakib Uddin, redeemed against your treatment if you go ahead.

Exact pricing is confirmed at consultation once dosing is known. Australian regulations prevent advertising prescription-medicine prices for specific products online.

What determines your quote

  • 01 Number of areas treated
  • 02 Muscle strength and the dose required
  • 03 Whether treatment is cosmetic or therapeutic (e.g. masseter for grinding)
  • 04 Maintenance plan and review schedule

You commit to nothing in advance: the consultation costs nothing and the quote is written before anything is booked. If the recommendation is not to treat, that advice is the whole appointment.

Afterpay acceptedZip accepted

Afterpay and Zip are available for treatment fees at the clinic, subject to each provider's own approval and terms.

Expert questions

The questions worth asking about wrinkle relaxer injections.

The questions that come up in the room, answered the way Dr Rakib answers them.

What should I understand before choosing wrinkle relaxer injections?

That the treatment addresses one specific cause of ageing: muscle movement. It will soften lines created by expression but won't replace lost volume, lift loose skin or repair sun damage. A good consultation identifies which of these factors is actually driving your concern before recommending anything.

Will I look frozen or expressionless?

Not with appropriate dosing and placement. The frozen look comes from over-treating or treating the wrong muscles. Dr Rakib maps your individual muscle pattern and doses conservatively: the aim is that you look rested, not different, and a two-week review allows fine adjustment.

How is dosing decided?

By muscle, not by template. Stronger muscles need more; smaller or expressive faces need less. Men typically need higher doses than women in the same area because of greater muscle mass. Your dose is set at assessment and refined over your first one or two treatments.

When is the right age to start?

There's no fixed age: the question is whether dynamic lines are starting to persist at rest. Treating at that point, rather than years later, prevents lines etching in deeply. Starting earlier than that adds little; a consultation can tell you plainly if you'd benefit from waiting.

Why do results differ between people?

Muscle strength, metabolism, skin quality and how deeply lines were etched before starting all vary. Two patients having identical treatment can hold their result for different lengths of time. Your pattern becomes predictable after the first couple of treatments, and the plan adjusts to it.

What happens if I simply stop treatment?

Muscle activity returns to normal over a few months and lines gradually resume their previous pattern. You won't look worse than before, but the protective effect of reduced creasing stops, so lines continue their natural progression.
