Recovery, considered

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating): Aftercare

Reviewed by Dr Rakib Uddin AHPRA MED0001936872

Treatment for excessive sweating is quick: recovery is short. The first 24 hours are about letting the muscle-relaxing medicine settle exactly where it was placed.

Hyperhidrosis treatment, what to expect after treatment

Treatment for excessive underarm sweating uses the same wrinkle relaxer injectable, placed superficially in a grid across each underarm. It blocks the nerve signal to the sweat glands. You will not be completely “dry” (eccrine sweat is reduced, not eliminated) but most patients report a meaningful reduction in 5–10 days, settling fully by 2 weeks. Results typically last 4–8 months.

What’s normal in the first 72 hours

  • Tiny mosquito-bite-like bumps in the grid pattern. These settle in 1–2 hours.
  • Mild tenderness or itching at injection points for 24 hours.
  • Sweating that feels unchanged for the first few days: onset is gradual.
  • Occasional small bruise at an injection point.

Please follow these instructions carefully

  • No deodorant, antiperspirant, perfume or scented products on the underarms for 24 hours.
  • Avoid rubbing, scratching or pressing the area for at least 6 hours after treatment.
  • No shaving the underarms for 24 hours.
  • No tight-fitting tops, sports bras with thick underarm bands, or compression that rubs the area for 24 hours.
  • No high-intensity exercise, hot showers, sauna or steam rooms for 24 hours.
  • Avoid touching the underarms unnecessarily for the rest of the day to prevent spreading of the medicine to nearby muscles.
  • Mineral powder or talc only for the first day if you’d like to absorb residual moisture: no roll-ons.
  • Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, aspirin) for 24 hours unless prescribed otherwise. Paracetamol is fine.

What to expect over the following weeks

  • Day 5–7: noticeable reduction in sweating begins.
  • Day 10–14: full effect, this is the “settled” point.
  • Month 4–6: gradual return of sweating: most patients return for repeat treatment around the 6-month mark.

When to contact the clinic

Weakness in the arms, difficulty lifting or pushing, or spreading of the effect beyond the underarm warrants contacting us. These are rare but worth checking. Persistent redness, heat or infection at injection points is also worth a quick review.

For best results we recommend a review appointment at 2 weeks to confirm settled outcome and document baseline before the next planned session.
