PRF for Hair: Aftercare

Reviewed by Dr Rakib Uddin AHPRA MED0001936872

PRF works by signalling existing follicles: what you do to your scalp in the days after each session helps that signal land.

PRF for hair, what to expect after treatment

PRF concentrates your own growth factors and reintroduces them to the scalp around active follicles. The biology that follows happens slowly: strengthening of existing hairs and improved density typically becomes visible from 3 months, with the full picture clearer at 6 months. The first 24–48 hours after each session are about not interfering with the inflammatory response that drives the result.

What’s normal in the first 72 hours

  • A heavy or tight feeling in the scalp.
  • Mild tenderness at injection points.
  • Tiny pinpoint bumps where PRF was placed. These settle within a day.
  • Occasional mild headache on the night of treatment.
  • A small amount of pinkness across the treated area.

Please follow these instructions carefully

  • Do not wash your hair or wet your scalp for 24 hours: leave the growth factors undisturbed.
  • No shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, hair masks or scalp treatments for 24 hours.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen) for 5 days before and 3 days after. They blunt the inflammatory signal PRF relies on. Paracetamol is fine.
  • No alcohol for 24 hours.
  • No high-intensity exercise, sauna, steam rooms or hot showers for 48 hours: heat and sweat irritate the scalp while it’s healing.
  • Avoid direct sun on a bare scalp for 48 hours: a soft hat is fine after the first day.
  • No hair dye, bleach, perming or chemical treatments for 7 days.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase the night of treatment.
  • When you do wash, use a gentle sulphate-free shampoo and lukewarm (not hot) water for the first wash.

A note on results

PRF is not a transplant. It cannot regrow hair from follicles that have already been lost permanently. It works on follicles that are still alive but miniaturising. We typically plan a course of 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, then maintenance every 4–6 months. Patience is part of the protocol.

When to contact the clinic

Spreading redness, heat, pus or a fever after treatment is unusual and warrants contacting us. Persistent tenderness past a week, or any concern about the scalp, is worth a quick check rather than waiting.

For best results we recommend reviewing progress at session 3 and again at the 6-month mark.
