Thread Lift: Aftercare

Reviewed by Dr Rakib Uddin AHPRA MED0001936872

PDO and PCL threads work over weeks as collagen builds around them. Protecting the threads in the first fortnight is what protects the result.

Thread lift, what to expect after treatment

Threads are placed in the deeper tissue and held under tension. The lift you see on the day of treatment is partly mechanical and partly from local swelling. Over the following weeks, collagen builds around each thread: that’s what gives the result its longevity. The first two weeks are about protecting the threads while that collagen scaffold sets.

What’s normal in the first 72 hours

  • Tightness, mild soreness or a “pulling” sensation when you smile or chew.
  • Small dimpling or puckering at entry points. This almost always smooths out within a few days.
  • Mild swelling, occasional bruising at insertion points.
  • A feeling that one side moves slightly differently from the other while swelling settles.

Please follow these instructions carefully

  • Sleep on your back for the first 7–10 nights: face-down or side-sleeping can shift threads while tissues are healing.
  • Avoid wide mouth opening for 2 weeks: no large bites, no big yawns where you can help it, no shouting or singing loudly.
  • Avoid dental work for 3 weeks, including hygienist cleans where the mouth is held open for long periods.
  • No facial massage, facials, microcurrent, RF or ultrasound on the area for 4 weeks.
  • No high-intensity exercise, sauna, steam rooms or hot yoga for 1 week.
  • Eat soft foods for 5–7 days: avoid tough meat, hard bread crusts and chewy lollies.
  • Sleep slightly elevated for the first 3 nights to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, aspirin) for 48 hours unless prescribed otherwise: paracetamol is fine.
  • Keep entry points clean and dry: gentle cleanser only, no active skincare (retinoids, acids, vitamin C) for 5 days.

When to contact the clinic

Visible thread ends at the surface, persistent dimpling that doesn’t ease after a week, sharp localised pain, spreading redness or any sign of infection (heat, throbbing, fever) all warrant contacting us straight away rather than waiting for review.

For best results we recommend a review appointment at 2 weeks, with a longer follow-up at 8–12 weeks once the collagen response has matured.
