Polynucleotide Treatment in Melbourne

There’s been a growing buzz around regenerative injectables in recent years, and polynucleotide treatment, often referred to as “skin healer” injections, keeps coming up. It sits in a unique category of treatments, offering skin rejuvenation from within without adding volume or altering your features. But what exactly are polynucleotides? Are they a type of filler? How do they work? And, most importantly, what kind of results can you realistically expect?

As a practitioner who’s passionate about subtle, skin-first results, I find polynucleotides genuinely useful for patients who want to improve skin quality, elasticity and resilience without looking like they’ve “had work done.” Here is everything you need to know.

Are polynucleotides a filler?

This is one of the most common questions I get in clinic. The short answer is no, polynucleotides are not a filler in the traditional sense. While both are injectable treatments, they work very differently.

Volume-enhancement injectables, typically made of hyaluronic acid, are designed to restore volume, shape and contour to areas like the cheeks, lips and jawline. They give immediate structure by physically filling space under the skin.

Polynucleotide treatment, on the other hand, does not add volume. It’s a bioregenerative approach using fragments of DNA derived from salmon, known for their excellent compatibility with human tissue. These polynucleotides don’t fill lines or plump the skin. They act as biological messengers, triggering your skin’s own repair processes and encouraging it to heal, hydrate and rejuvenate from the inside out.

How do polynucleotides work?

The treatment works at a cellular level. Once injected into the skin, the polynucleotides stimulate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. These are the essential building blocks of firm, resilient skin.

The polynucleotides also have powerful anti-inflammatory effects, which help repair damage, calm irritated or sensitised skin, and support the regeneration of the skin’s protective barrier. This makes the treatment especially useful for patients dealing with issues like fine lines, dullness, acne scarring, redness or early signs of ageing.

Unlike volume enhancement, which delivers immediate visual volume, polynucleotide results build gradually over time. It’s more about restoring your skin’s health and structure than adding anything artificial.

What results can you expect?

Because this is a regenerative treatment, the results are subtle, natural and progressive. Most patients begin to see improvements in skin texture, hydration and radiance within a few weeks of treatment. The full effects tend to develop over several months as collagen and elastin production increases.

What patients love about polynucleotides is how they enhance the skin in a way that’s hard for anyone else to spot. You’ll just look healthier, fresher and more rested. Your skin will feel smoother, appear more even-toned, and respond better to skincare and other treatments.

The treatment is especially effective around the eyes, on the cheeks, and in areas with fine lines or early signs of laxity. It’s also a strong option for patients who want to improve skin quality without changing their facial structure, including younger patients, post-acne skin, or anyone looking to build a solid foundation for long-term skin health.

How many sessions do you need?

While every skin is different, I typically recommend a course of three to four sessions spaced around three to four weeks apart. After that, maintenance sessions every six months can help sustain the benefits and continue collagen regeneration.

Because the treatment works with your biology, results improve over time and continue to build with consistent care. I often include it as part of a wider skin health protocol, especially in patients looking to improve texture, barrier function, or early ageing without downtime or dramatic changes.

Who are polynucleotides suited to?

Polynucleotides suit a wide range of skin types and concerns, but they’re particularly beneficial for those noticing early signs of ageing, fine lines, dullness, dark under-eye circles, or mild scarring. They also suit patients who have become sensitive to other treatments or want to shift toward regenerative, skin-boosting therapies that promote long-term skin health.

If you’re not ready for other injectables or prefer a more natural approach to rejuvenation, polynucleotides are a well-researched option with a growing evidence base.
