The short answer
Good results start before the appointment and continue after it. Sensible preparation and aftercare reduce bruising, protect your skin and help results last.
Cosmetic injectables and skin boosters have become incredibly popular for enhancing facial features and achieving a more lifted and rejuvenated appearance. However, to ensure you get the best possible results, both pre and post-care are crucial steps in the process. Here’s how to set yourself up for success before and after your appointment.
Pre-Care: Laying the Foundation for a Smooth Experience
Your aesthetic journey starts long before you enter the clinic. Proper preparation can minimise the risk of complications, reduce discomfort, and support the best possible outcome.1. Choose a Skilled and Experienced PractitionerYour injector plays a key role in the results you’ll get. It’s essential to do your research and choose a licensed, board-certified provider with experience in the specific outcome you’re considering. Look for Google reviews, before-and-after imagery (Note: with TGA protocols any treatment that uses a prescription only medication - such as hyaluronic acid fillers - is not permitted to be used as promotional before and after imagery so this step can prove a little challenging with some treatments). Look for content that is explanatory, empathetic and knowledgeable and any certifications that demonstrate their expertise.2. Consultation is KeyMost clinics offer an initial consultation, which is your chance to discuss your goals and expectations. During this time, be realistic about your medical history, allergies, and any previous treatments you’ve had. Your practitioner will assess your facial anatomy, explain the various treatment options, and outline a plan tailored to your needs.3. Avoid Certain Medications and SupplementsCertain medications and supplements can increase your risk of bruising and swelling post-treatment. These include:
- Blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen
- Vitamins such as vitamin E, fish oil, and ginseng
- Alcohol (which thins the blood)
For optimal results, avoid these for at least 5-7 days before your appointment. Always check with your healthcare provider before discontinuing any medication.4. Hydrate and Nourish Your SkinWell-hydrated skin is more responsive to injectables and collagen stimulating treatments, and it can help minimise bruising and swelling. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Additionally, a good skincare routine that includes moisturisers and sunscreen will ensure your skin is in top condition.5. Schedule Around Major EventsIf you have an important event coming up, such as a wedding or vacation, schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks (ideally a month or so in the event any touch ups are required) in advance. While most treatments have minimal downtime, some individuals may experience swelling, bruising or prolonged redness. Giving yourself time to recover ensures you’ll be looking your best.6. Arrive Makeup-FreeIt’s recommended to arrive at your appointment without makeup, especially if you’re having skin boosting treatments on the face. This allows your injector to properly assess your skin and make precise injections. If you’re nervous, remember that your practitioner is there to make the process as comfortable as possible.
Post-Care: Maximizing Your Results and Comfort
Once the treatment is complete, following post-care guidelines is essential to achieve the best results. Aftercare can help reduce the risk of side effects, support healing, and maintain the longevity of your treatment.1. Avoid Touching or Massaging the Treated AreaIt’s tempting to check the results immediately, but avoid massaging or pressing on the treated area for at least 24 hours. This ensures that the injectables settle properly into the target area or allow your skin the best chance to heal any microinjuries, such as with Microneedling, as your body’s collagen and growth factors get to work. Any unnecessary pressure or prodding could lead to uneven results.2. Minimize Physical ActivityStrenuous exercise, including activities like running, hot yoga, or intense weightlifting, can increase the risk of swelling or bruising. Avoid any vigorous physical activity for at least 24 hours post-treatment. This also applies to saunas or hot baths that could increase blood flow and cause complications.3. Apply Ice if NeededMild swelling or bruising is common after injectable treatments. Applying a cold compress for 10–15 minutes at a time can help alleviate these symptoms. However, avoid placing the ice directly on your skin, wrap it in a clean cloth to protect your skin from frostbite. Treatments such as PRF with Microneedling do not require ice as we want the controlled inflammation in this instance but your practitioner will inform you directly after your treatment if ice is best or not.4. Use Sunscreen and Protect Your SkinAfter any injectable treatment, your skin may be more sensitive than usual. Protect it by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily. Sun exposure can cause irritation or pigmentation changes, especially around the injection sites.5. Monitor for Any Adverse ReactionsWhile rare, some individuals may experience side effects such as infection, excessive bruising, or allergic reactions. If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as redness, fever, or intense pain at the injection site, contact your provider immediately.6. Stay Patient, Results Take TimeThe final results are not always immediately visible. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t notice changes right away.7. Avoid Alcohol and SmokingBoth alcohol and smoking can interfere with healing and increase the risk of bruising. For optimal results, it’s best to avoid both for at least 24-48 hours post-treatment. Smoking can also break down the collagen and elastin in your skin, which could negatively affect the longevity of your results.8. Follow Up Appointments and Touch-UpsInjectables treatments often require touch-ups to maintain the results. Your injector will provide a timeline for follow-up appointments based on your treatment and personal needs. Staying consistent with these appointments ensures your look stays refreshed.
