Cosmetic treatments safe for pregnancy | Dr Rakib Kew, Melbourne

Many pregnant women have skin and hair concerns just as they did before pregnancy. Sometimes conditions such as acne even worsen during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. However, due to concerns about potentially dangerous and hazardous exposures to their unborn baby, pregnant women are often uncertain about which products are safe for them to use.

While you’re pregnant you need to pay close attention to what you’re putting in or on your body. Can you maintain your wrinkle reducing treatment? Keep up with Waxing? Here’s a list on what to use and what to avoid during your pregnancy.

What cosmetic treatments are safe, and not safe, during pregnancy?FacialsThe great news is, facials are generally considered safe during pregnancy, especially ones that use natural products. Pregnancy hormones can wreak havoc with your skin, and a deep-cleansing facial involving exfoliation and moisturising are absolutely safe, as well as facials that contain safe ingredients like collagen and water can help reduce an outbreak of spots.

Oxygen facials can increase circulation while promoting cellular renewal, and plump out fine lines and wrinkles. Hydrating facials that use moisture-rich treatments and products can also help to hydrate your skin.

Skin Peels

There is quite a lot of conflicting advice about skin peels during pregnancy. Superficial chemical peels that use lactic acid are widely accepted as being safe, however peels that use other chemicals should be avoided.

It’s worth noting that your skin will be continuously changing due to natural hormonal changes during pregnancy, and therefore feels won’t necessarily give you the glow you’re looking for. As a result, it may be best to save this treatment for a post-pregnancy treat.Skin NeedlingSkin needling is considered safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women provided the therapist is using shallow needles (less than 0.5mm). It’s strongly recommended that you consult with your GP before receiving a skin needling treatment and then with your aesthetician regarding any skin conditions brought on by the pregnancy.

While the needles used may be small, they still produce tiny injuries and trigger a healing response from your body. As with any bodily function, you will need nutrients to heal yourself: nutrients that your baby might also need to grow.

It would be best to avoid skin needling until after the breastfeeding period to help you deal with any possible melasma (blue-grey patches on your skin) and hyperpigmentation which are common skin concerns during pregnancy.

Wrinkle Reduction Treatments and Dermal Enhancements

This is a hard no. Wrinkle relaxer products act on the nerve-muscle signal when injected, and injecting any such substance into your body during pregnancy is not advised. There is simply not enough information available to justify using wrinkle relaxers and fillers for cosmetic reasons during pregnancy.

For women who regularly have Wrinkle reducing treatments and dermal enhancements, this can be a big change in routine, however pregnancy hormones can work in your face’s favour. Lips tend to get bigger during pregnancy and as your pregnancy progresses your skin is likely to plump out, naturally filling out wrinkles.

Fat Dissolving Injections

Pregnancy can mean an excess of skin where you didn’t have it before, including your jawline. While the fat dissolving treatment contains a naturally occurring substance, deoxycholic acid, there have not been any studies regarding pregnancy or nursing for this treatment. As a result, most doctors would not advise patients to receive fat dissolving injections while pregnant, so you’ll want to defer this one until after the pregnancy and breastfeeding is over.

Bioremodelling Treatment

This is a relatively new treatment on the market and while bioremodelling treatments are regarded as safe it is not medically ethical to provide this treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. It hasn’t been tested and it is recommended that you wait until after your pregnancy and breastfeeding period to receive the bioremodelling treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) Treatment

Although PRP and PRF are likely to be safe during pregnancy as it’s your own blood, there have been no clinical studies performed using PRP or PRF in pregnant or breastfeeding women. As a result, it is not recommended to receive these treatments during pregnancy.
